Did American Idol lose it's lustre?

Yes, in my opinion, definately. Maybe it will get better this season. That whole fixation with Sanjaya last round totally turned me off and no one really cared about the winner.

AI is much different this year. Contestants were able to use instruments or be accompanied by a band, but no more group competitions. Also, the judges have a say in the results, not just America's pre-teen fingers on a phone keypad. I'm looking forward to the next episode.
i don't like it, so i never watched it
but yes, usually you hear about it all the time on teh news
but you don't anymore...
We are now observing an apologetic dynamic for moving those with less talent (and more gimmick/faux personality) on to the next round of competition. Although it seems to make for good TV, the producers have crossed a personal front for most viewers. The populus still based their viewership on talent being the primary criterion for success. Now that that's gone, the program offers a more blatant display of scripted pop material based on spectacle, product placement and promotional partners. Giving people the benefit of the doubt however, means that viewership will decline as people determine their intelligence has finally been insulted to the point of no return.
American Idol is still entertaining for me, but I skipped the auditions this year and started watching during Hollywood week.
