The 1800's and early 1900's The pose with one hand close to your heart, four fingers under their middle opening between the front of a shirt or jacket and the thumb staying on the outside of the clothing was a polite gentleman manner and good social skills, this was easier and commonly done with a full tailored suit, in particularly with a vest on.

This was a Photo pose for men, and a gentleman stance in the old days.
