Dogs are generally referred to as intelligent animals, although some breeds are known for their intelligence more than others.

Border Collies are known for their ability to learn commands but other breeds may be known for their ability to figure out how to escape from a yard or gain food. As a result of their different abilities, dogs are trained for a variety of jobs. Some dogs are known for their exceptional sense of smell making them great search and rescue dogs. Others with the desire to escape and run are used to explore Arctic areas or for travel in places that traditional vehicles cannot access.

Intelligence in dogs is hard to define because some dogs that learn quickly might be exhibiting the desire to please. Dogs that don't care about pleasing their owners, like huskies can figure out how to get out of a cage or yard or whatever they see as a barrier.

Assistance dogs must be obedient at all times so they have to learn many commands and ignore distractions, and recognize threats to the humans they serve.
