A growl can mean different things. Sometimes the dog is showing dominance or aggression, especially if it is a soft low-pitched growl, and the dog may attack. Some growls, especially when the dog doesn't show teeth often shows a playful attitude. Always be careful and aware if a dog is growling.

Yeah, a growl doesn'y always mean die! My dog only growls when she wants to play, she is so mild tempered!

Generally not :) dogs grow mainly as a show of dominanace, its there early warning system. Its like you shouting at someone, rarely you may hit them, but not very often, the same with a dog and its growl.

Well...if I growl I am going to bite... But not neccessarily with dogs. Dogs grown not only in aggression or to show dominance but in playful manners too. You can always avoid hostility by not making eye contact with an upset animal.
