Within the species of fish that have scales, there are four types.

Placoid scales which are similar to teeth because they are made of dentin covered by enamel. These scales are typical of sharks and rays.

Ganoid scales, flat, gasal-looking scales that cover a fish with little overlapping. These scales are typical in gar and bichirs.

Cycloid scales, small ovel shaped scales with growth rings. Found in bowfin and remora.

Ctenoid scales which are sinilar to cycloid scales with growth rings. But they are distinguished by the smapes that cover one edge. Halibut is an example of this type of scale.
