The term asbestos applies to certain mineral fibres that historically were used in the building and construction industries because of their insulating and fire-proof nature as well as their great strength. In recent years it has been proven that long-term exposure to asbestos can lead to diseases like mesothelioma, asbestos and lung cancer.

Given this, anybody who intends to remove asbestos from their property should use the utmost care.

When investigating asbestos removal you'll need to understand the difference between the terms "friable" and "non-friable". You will find the term "non-friable" is used to describe fibres that are held solidly and unless damaged are not likely to become airborne. "Friable" asbestos means the fibres are in poor condition and can become airborne by crushing them with your bare hands.

This asbestos dust is what leads to the diseases discussed earlier in this article. As such, you should exercise extreme caution when working to remove asbestos from your home. Below are some helpful tips to remove asbestos dust while you're doing a renovation project:-

It's best to use hand tools to minimise the release of dust. Power tools are more likely to damage asbestos surfaces.

If you need to sand, make it a wet sand. Dry sanding releases asbestos fibres into the air.
Dampen the asbestos material before working with it to minimise the risk of dust being released. Do not use a high-pressure jet.

Adding some dish-washing liquid to the water you use will help soak up asbestos particles.

If you need to clean your asbestos cladding or roofing, use a low-pressure water system. Do not use highly abrasive techniques or jets.

Once you have finished the work, clean up the area thoroughly and dispose of waste according to your local laws.

It is not recommended that you remove asbestos by yourself. We suggest employing an asbestos removal contractor who has been educated and trained in safe asbestos removal, and uses the appropriate equipment.
