If you see currency (money) in the street you have a first duty to hand it in at your local police station. There you will have to fill out a form stating what you've found (and in this case how much you've found), where you found it and other details including your name and address, etc.

If no-one comes forward to claim it after a certain period of time YOU can claim it as legal finders-keepers (there's probably a posh word for that). Of course, if you happen to find several thousands of dollars, or more, in the street then forget about keeping that as the owner will almost certainly be looking for it.

Your second, and illegal, option is to simply pocket the money and walk away. If you can live with being a FILTHY STEALING CRIMINAL WHO DESERVES TO ROT FOREVER IN THE FOULEST PIT OF HELL then fine, just pocket it and walk on. Best bet is to hand it in, after all most people who drop less than a 50 will walk back, usually not find it, curse their bad luck and then forget about it while you being the honest citizen will only have to wait a few weeks or so and then it is your legally. Everyone wins (except the poor sap who dropped it) and all is ok.
