If the computer had not been invented then a lot of the things we take for granted would not exist OR if they did exist would be slower, bulkier, more expensive and more unreliable. Alternatives for many things would have been invented to be sure - necessity IS the Mother of invention after all.
You may want to check out some 'steampunk' as that genre explores a modern Worlds technology based on steam and coal rather than electricity and computers. You might like it. See:
