Could the compost pile I have a few feet away from my kitchen be attracting sugar ants into the house?

It can. Sugar is made of carbon, and lots of sugar compounds can be found in compost. Chances are that sugar ants have found their sugar-land in the compost pile, and that they're looking for more food sources in your home.
