Many books have been written on this subject. I will answer this Question from my own experence. . I was rased in Michigan and spent a great deal of time in the woods, as a youth.
It easy to get lost, every thing seems to look the same, unless you look close, therefore the first thing is Do Not Panic,You can and will find your out. Take stock of what you have with you, such as pocket knife ,etc. estamate how far you are into the woods, then you will have some kind of an idea about how long it will take you to get out. Depending on that, you can then deside what you need most to suvervive. Water, shelter and food will be at the top of that mental list, in that order. What time of day is it? What time of the year is it? What direction were you heading when you entered the woods?
The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. That is a simple fact that you will forget if you panic.
Moss grows mostly on the north side of trees. But don't just look at one tree, look at all the trees around you so that you can see what side the moss is on most of them, that will be north. The reason that is true is because the sun hits that side the least. If you find a stream follow it down not up. If you are not out of the woods by morning call me from your cell phone, and I'll tell you more.
