Yes, rarely is it found a one person website is locked under a contract in hosting a website.
Login to your hosting account, download your website to your hard drive if you have not got a back up copy already. End your account with that hosting company from your hosting account.
I suggest you use www.freehostia.com to host your site, it's free. Freehostia is happy to host your website for free, no extra ads either on your site, no catches, just free.
But if you use complicated codes in your sites then pay for a hosting, but keep an eye out for those free hosting sites.
