The electric car was killed by the lack of affordable, long-lasting battery technology. It isn't actually dead, and is seeing a resurgence with the increased global awareness of the need for more "green" technology in the auto industry and the need for us to drastically decrease our dependence on oil. The most popular form of "electric" car is now the hybrid car which uses a combination of electricity and hydrogen fuel cell.
However, there are new advances in existing battery technology every day. Very soon, cars will be available that will recharge on your standard home electrical outlet and be able to drive 200+ miles on a charge.
