There are a few debated answers to this question, but it is probably most widely accepted that the inventor of the first automobile was Karl Benz, a German engineer and designer. On January 29, 1886 he filed a patent for the first car. (The name "Benz" resides today in the popular and high quality automobile manufacturer Mercedes Benz). The car that he invented he dubbed the "Motorwagen", and is said to have been the first, four-stroke, gasoline powered commercial automobile.
However, this is somewhat debated; due to the fact that inventors had been speculating about steam powered carriages long before. Although these are not the gas-powered cars we know today, they are still considered some form of automobiles. Examples of these early and advanced motorized inventions are:
-Nicholas Joseph Cugnot with "The Cugnot Carriage" in 1769
-Sir Goldswerth Gurney with "The Gurney Steam Coach" in 1825
-Amedee Bollee with "La Mancelle" in 1878.
