On August 16, 1977, at his Graceland mansion in Memphis, Tennessee, Presley was found lying on the floor of his bedroom's bathroom by his fiancee, Ginger Alden, who had been asleep. A stain on the bathroom carpeting was found that indicated "where Elvis had thrown up after being stricken, apparently while seated on the toilet. It looked to the medical investigator as if he had 'stumbled or crawled several feet before he died'."[84] He was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital, where at 3:30 P.M. doctors pronounced him dead. Presley was 42 years old, and when he died, "he weighed 159 kilograms" (350 pounds).[85]

At a press conference following his death, one of the medical examiners declared that he had died of a cardiac arrhythmia from an intake of a large amount of drugs.

Rolling Stone magazine devoted an entire issue to Presley (RS 248) and his funeral was a national media event. [12] Hundreds of thousands of Presley fans, the press, and celebrities lined the street to witness Presley's funeral and Jackie Cahane gave the eulogy.

Presley was originally buried at Forest Hill Cemetery in Memphis next to his mother. After an attempted theft of the body, his remains and his mother's remains were moved to Graceland to the "meditation gardens."

Following Presley's death in 1977, US President Jimmy Carter said, "Elvis Presley's death deprives our country of a part of itself. He was unique and irreplaceable. More than 20 years ago, he burst upon the scene with an impact that was unprecedented and will probably never be equaled. His music and his personality, fusing the styles of white country and black rhythm and blues, permanently changed the face of American popular culture. His following was immense, and he was a symbol to people the world over of the vitality, rebelliousness, and good humor of his country."[86]

Controversy surrounding death

In her 1987 book Elvis and Kathy, friend and backup vocalist Kathy Westmoreland wrote "Everyone knew he was sick, that each public appearance brought him to the point of exhaustion." Kathy has been known to counter common misconceptions concerning Elvis's lifestyle and health leading up to his death.

According to Peter Guralnick's book, Careless Love: The Unmaking of Elvis Presley (1999), "drug use was heavily implicated in this unanticipated death of a middle-aged man with no known history of heart disease...no one ruled out the possibility of anaphylactic shock brought on by the codeine pills he had gotten from his dentist, to which he was known to have had a mild allergy of long standing...There was little disagreement in fact between the two principal laboratory reports and analyses filed two months later, with each stating a strong belief that the primary cause of death was polypharmacy, and the BioScience Laboratories report...indicating the detection of fourteen drugs in Elvis's system, ten in significant quantity."

Michael M. Baden and Judith Adler Hennessee say, "Elvis had had an enlarged heart for a long time. That, together with his drug habit, caused his death. But he was difficult to diagnose; it was a judgment call."[87]

In his book, Elvis: The Last 24 Hours, Albert Goldman even went as far as to suggest that Presley committed suicide by overdosing on a stash of drugs that he stockpiled. David Stanley, Presley's stepbrother, who was at Graceland the day Presley died, is alleged to have removed the needles and drug packets near Presley's body before the paramedics arrived, suggesting that he did not want to see Presley's name tarred with the brush of suicide. These rumors have been strongly rejected by some of Elvis's family and friends such as Joe Espositio during past appearances on the Larry King Show.

On the other hand, some of his closest family members, friends, band members, and background singers have long disputed stories concerning Presley's alleged prescription drug abuse and "self-destructive" lifestyle. At the same time, they have not denied that he did take prescription medications for bona fide or suspected health problems. For instance, Vernon Presley, Kathy Westmoreland, Charlie Hodge, and J.D. Sumner pointed out that Presley also suffered from severe health problems unrelated to drug abuse. These health problems included glaucoma, chronic insomnia, and perhaps even bone cancer. The illness may have increased his dependency on prescription medication. In 1977 alone, his personal physician Dr. George Constantine Nichopoulos (usually referred to as "Dr Nick") had prescribed 10,000 hits of amphetamines, barbiturates, narcotics, tranquilizers, sleeping pills, laxatives, and hormones.

herghost, you gave the best and more than likely most accurate account of Elvis' death. One think I had to comment: I heard that Elvvis went to the dentist who prescribed the codeine pills. Elvis, being mildly allergic and seeing the doc's mistake, ordered a replacement prescription. Rumor has it that someone at Graceland replaced the new prescription with the codeine pills--in order to sell the new prescription pills on the street for $5-6 a pill! The anaphylactic shock brought on by the codeine pills would explain this theory don't you think? What is your take on what i am wondering could have been a conspiracy of murder--or simply plain greed--or negligence.

In 1994, the autopsy into Presley's death was re-opened. Coroner Dr. Joseph Davis declared: "There is nothing in any of the data that supports a death from drugs. In fact, everything points to a sudden, violent heart attack."However, there is little doubt that long-term drug misuse caused his premature death. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elvis_Presley#Post_mortem

Earlier, no one ruled out the possibility of anaphylactic shock brought on by the codeine pills
Presley had developed many health problems, some of them chronic. "Elvis had an enlarged heart for a long time. That, together with his drug habit, caused his death. But he was difficult to diagnose; it was a judgment call."

The medical profession has been seriously questioned. Medical Examiner Dr. Jerry Francisco had offered a cause of death while the autopsy was still being performed and before toxicology results were known. Dr. Francisco dubiously stated that cardiac arrhythmia was the cause of death, a condition that can only be determined in a living person?not post mortem.

The singer allegedly spent at least $1 million per year on drugs and doctors' fees or inducements.

I think there was something strange that went on that morning.Elvis was alergic to codine, and had dilaudid's there to take,or did he.I have always felt Ricky stanley had something to do with it.I think Ricky switched out with Elvis,Not relizing what effect this would cause Elvis to have.Or new but also new Elvis was going to can all but three of his memphis Cronies.I think it was get the money and run.only vernon put a hault to that.if you look at the will you will notice the 1976 has been crossed out by marker, and 1977 writen over top of it.how this will got probated I will never no,But it did.vernon felt someone had did something.he told his neice donna (I can't stand the thought of them running around while my baby is in the ground).he wasn't talking about mafia hit men he was talking about someone inside the group.who was on duty that morning,Ricky and david.Elvis had a hand writen will verified by almost all of the group.even Billy smith confirms this.vernon destroyed it.when he learned what killedd Elvis was codine,he snaped.my question is why would his dentist, who new he was alergic to codine, write it for him.the dilaudid tablets where not recovered from elvis room, where did it go.the codine was,the codine from hoffman was.Dr.nick got it.So that leaves us with one other and more plausable way to get codine into elvis body.david says he removed syringes from elvis room.what was in them?two had been used, one had not.Now sence Elvis would no what the tablets were,it makes more sence to me,Elvis would not no what was in a syringe, other than what he was told.he had no way to identify what was in them.he trusted those around him.he could have been told got you some liquid demerol,or morphine,or dilaudid.maybe that is what Ricky was zonked out on when he was supposed to be watching Elvis. He says himself he saw elvis about eight hours before elvis died.this is a strange thing when you look at the statement.no one really knows what time elvis died,or do they.so how can he fix a time fram to something no one suposedly knows. unless he was there.maybe that was his motivation for cleaning and clearing his life and concious.I have studyed this event for about 31 years, and the thing that just don't fit for some reason or another is the codine present, and the dilaudid not present.it always seemed to come back to a switch of some kind.but elvis would not have taken codine knowingly.only explanation to me is injection.I have discussed this idea with several people, and at allexperts.com.and no one really want's to go there.it is the only thing logical.but i have noticed a large amount of people are begenning to focus on the codine issue.i hope somebody really can find foundation for this, and maybe investigate a little and maybe a few people.get to the botom of this thing.if something like this did actualy happen,Then we would all be looking at the fact Elvis was Murdered.

How does rick stanley no what time elvis died.that would fit into something else.elvis was stiff, rigor had set in,elvis wass fixed and locked.so he had been gone for about 4 hours.when found.if the accounts are correct elvis was found around 2:00 pm.some say noon.but lets look at the 2:00 o'clock time frame.he couldn't have talked to elvis two hours under either time frame.two oclock would have put thier conversation around noon.and under the other time fram he would have talked to elvis around 10:00 am.but the only one that fits with the condition elvis was found in would be the two oclock one.it takes four hours, for this process to occure, which would place time of passing around 9 or 10 am.but it was estimated by medical people elvis had been gone 4 hours at lest, could have been as much as 5 hours.and 4 or 5 hours would put us back to the time ricky claims he gave Elvis his last packlet of pills.and within minutes of this delivery Elvis was gone.seems ricky would have noticed something.or missed it by minutes.but any way sence elvis left with no one with him,no one really knows what time he passed.or do they.So ricky could not have talked to elvis two hours before he passed. my question is where was everybody that morning.these people need some real old fashion professional questioning.I still say something isn't right.

I don't trust anything the stanley's say. Their stories are very difficult to believe. Yes...rick stanley was a BIG druggie and was his brother. As he stated before he had given elvis his meds was before 2 hours prior to elvis' death. He was in the billiard room of elvis' house drugged himself. I agree, something is amiss..why wasn't someone checking on Elvis sooner..Ginger Alden sure didn't bother herself did she? Makes me wonder.

Elvis died by the hand of his doctor George Constantyine or "Dr Nick". Why was the man not prosecuted? Elvis died because of the large ingestion of drugs given to him by Dr Nick. This good doctor is guilty of murder by association. Once again, why was he not prosecuted and jailed? Evidently it was all hushed up. Elvis Presely died, because the drugs that he was ingesting in large quantities weakened his system. A natural progression for someone who continues to do that is death. It is that simple, really. His heart could not work on overtime anymore. It faltered, sputtered and stopped. The King fell from his throne (his potty) and died.End of story. The rest is hysteria and bad impersonations.
