There are two important answers to this question. The first, and most important, is that the Bible comes from God. Paul wrote: "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God" (2 Timothy 3:16). The word "Scripture" means writing. But this was not just any writing; Paul was talking about the Word of God.

Some people may think that that Scripture contains the words of God, and everything else was made up by men. But Paul said that all Scripture was inspired or "breathed out" by God. Yes, the Bible had human writers, but they "spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit" (2 Peter 1:21).

Second, the Bibles we read today come from translations of the ancient texts. "To translate" means to put in the words of another language. Most of the Old Testament was written in the Hebrew language, but it was translated into Greek by the time of Jesus' birth. Most of the New Testament was written in Greek.

Christianity spread quickly, and people started to make many copies of the Gospels, the letters of Paul, and other books of the New Testament. They wanted to read the Old Testament as well, and so all the books were put together in one big library of God's Word that we call the Bible. (The word "Bible" comes from a Greek word meaning "books.")

After a while, men who respected the Bible as the Word of God saw the need to put the Scriptures into many other languages. Sadly, some men did not want these translations. They were afraid that ordinary people would read the Bible for themselves, and see that many of their religious practices did not agree with God's Word.

Finally, a few brave men began to produce translations for everyone to read. Sometimes they would do this in secret, or in places where they felt safe. Today, the Bible can be read in over 300 different languages, and billions of copies have gone to every corner of the world. Almost anyone can read how God wants them to be saved, and how He wants them to live and worship.

God has given us His Word. He has made sure that we can read it in our own language thousands of years after it was first written. There is only one thing left to do: read it!
