OMG in my 5th grade class we're doing reports on explorers and I'm doing it on Hernando de Soto. China is the rong answer and your also in the rong continent De Soto was from Jerez de los Caballeros, Spain here is my rough draft, please edit. Hernando De Soto By Andrew Lee Guess who was the first European explorer to discover the Mississippi River inland? The person is an explorer named Hernando De Soto. He was an, an explorer from Europe who explored much of the southern United States in a search of gold & jewels. He was born on? 1500, in Jerez de loss Caballeros, Spain. De Soto served under Pedrarias Davila in Central America and joined the expeditions of Diego de Almogo and Francisco Pizaro that conquered Inca of Peru. In 1537, De Soto was named governor of Cuba and got permission to go to Florida. De Soto started sailing from Spain in 1538 and landed in Florida a few months later on May 30 1539. As soon as he landed in Florida, De Soto and his crew marched up north. Going north, De Soto and men marched through Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas. After they spent winter in Florida, De Soto and men marched back through Georgia, then they turned west to Tennessee, and into Alabama. De Soto’s journey paused for a while because De Soto and men got into a battle with Indians in Maubilla, in October. After that battle, De Soto and men marched through Alabama and hot into Mississippi where they spent the winter of 1540-1541. When spring came, the big discovery came. De Soto and men got to the Mississippi River on May 21 1541. De Soto and his men were the first Europeans to discover the Mississippi River inland and that is why we still remember Hernando De Soto today. However De Soto and men weren’t expecting the Mississippi River because it’s not gold or jewels but there might be some in the river but De Soto didn’t take a chance to look, he just crossed the river. About a year later he died and the men wouldn’t continue the journey without De Soto, so De Soto’s expeditions failed. I think Hernando De Soto is an awesome explorer because he was the first European to discover the Mississippi River inland.
