The majority of known asteroids have orbits between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. They cannot form a planet because of Jupiter's gravitational pull. They make up the main asteroid belt.
Another group of minor planets are the Damocloid asteroids known as the "Oort Cloud Group" and are defined as objects that have "fallen in " from the Oort cloud.

An asteroid belt is a circular ring of rocks that looks like a belt.
Many theorys surround how they come to be, one is that a planet so large was destoryed by an Astriod. The planet would have blown up sending the rocks outwards creating a belt.
